An Odd Blob... Empty An Odd Blob...

Post by Brent September 24th 2009, 2:00 pm

Every year at the beach, numerous amounts of "blobs" as I call them can be found in the water. They are completely see-through other than a few purple perpendicular lines lining the inner edge. I believe them to be jellyfish, though they do not have tentacles. They range from a single inch to approximately 6 inches in length. They are definately not Mushroom Cap Jellyfish.

Can anyone tell me what these things might be?

Are they purple in the center? I have seen something that sounds similar in Imperial Beach, CA

Probably a moon jelly (there are ones that have perpendicular lines, I just forget the name) or a similar one. Go out at night, grab a living one and shake it, it will light up. <-Flourescent

Take a pic!

I'll take a pic next year. The water has already gone frigid.

Yeah, purple in the center. It most likely is a Moon Jelly from what you say, although it looks nothing like the pictures on google. I'll be sure to check eventually!

Alright, I wasn't sure if it was an invert or not so that's why I put it here.

And, that's not what they look like here... Not at all.

Interesting. Maybe you have a sub species? What they look like on the beach is round blobs with purple centers and if you pick them up they fall apart but in the ocean they can open up and swim as shown in the pictures.

I never see them on the beach, although it is true that they fall apart if picked up. In the water the hardly open at all, though it is possible to see them propelling themselves through the water from a small opening.

I dunno... The sea is pretty dangerous after summer, the undertow always increases as the year progresses. I promise to take pictures next summer though.

NR get's thousands of posts daily... Everytime you post less than I minute later your topic is gone halfway down the list of active topics. I think it'd be cool for this one to get big, but maybe not Nano-Reef big.
